arcoco is an English vocabulary game for iPhone and Android. It is for people who already understand English and want more words to choose from. A short self-assessment gives you a starting point. From there, you meet words in different contexts and return to them as you play, with your Journal keeping track of your practice.

What do you actually do?

  1. Find a starting point

A short check asks which words feel comfortable. That starting point, along with your later answers, helps shape the practice.

  2. Explore meanings and contexts

Some activities ask you to match a word to its meaning. Others give you a sentence gap to fill or a picture to consider.

  3. Play with words you are learning

In Pressure Test, catch matching words before the piranhas do. In River Runner, steer through the right word gates. Formats become available as you progress.

  4. Return and review

Words come back for practice. Open the Journal to revisit them and see their progress. The labels describe how you are doing in the app; they are not a formal assessment of your spoken English.

One word from arcoco’s vocabulary

Meticulous

Showing extreme care and attention to every detail.

Think of someone checking the position of every tiny window on a model before displaying it. You could call them careful. “Meticulous” tells you more about the attention they are giving each detail.

The word and definition come from arcoco; the model example is an illustration for this guide. Games, prompts and their order vary with your progress.

Who is it for?

You should already be comfortable using English, whether you are a native speaker or a confident learner. Parents considering it for a teenager can read our guide to vocabulary practice for reluctant readers aged 13+ and review the game’s content and difficulty together. arcoco is not directed at under-13s.

What does it not cover?

arcoco is not a complete beginner English course, a pronunciation coach, speech therapy or an exam preparation programme. It gives you vocabulary practice through games. We have not established through a controlled study that playing improves spontaneous speech or school results.
