Careful vs meticulous: what’s the difference?
Careful means paying attention so you avoid a mistake, an accident or damage. Meticulous is stronger and narrower: extremely careful, with attention to every small detail. Anyone meticulous is careful, but you can be careful without being meticulous.
careful
adjective
Paying attention to what you are doing so you avoid a mistake, an accident or damage.
“Be careful on the stairs. They are still wet.”
meticulous
adjective
Extremely careful, with great attention to every detail.
“Her notes were meticulous, down to the time of each phone call.”
How to choose
Reach for careful when the point is avoiding harm or a mistake: careful driving, a careful answer, being careful with a full glass. It works for a single moment or a habit.
Reach for meticulous when the care shows in the details and usually takes time: meticulous research, a meticulous plan, meticulous records. It tends to describe work or a way of working, so you would tell a friend to be careful crossing an icy road, not meticulous.
Meticulous is usually a compliment. To criticise someone for too much attention to detail, use fussy or pedantic.
| Situation | Better word | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Crossing an icy road | careful | The aim is to avoid an accident. |
| Restoring an old painting one tiny patch at a time | meticulous | The care is in every small detail. |
| Choosing your words in a tense meeting | careful | Avoiding mistakes and offence. |
| Filing every receipt by date, with notes | meticulous | Thorough, detailed record-keeping. |
